University of Évora inaugurated "Oblivion", a supercomputer installed in partnership with the ENGAGE SKA research consortium.
The inauguration of "Oblivion" took place on February 4, at the University of Évora, in a ceremony attended by the member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Science and Technology, Nuno Feixa Rodrigues.
This initiative is the result of a partnership between the University of Évora and the ENGAGE SKA Consortium - an organization that includes seven Portuguese institutions (Instituto de Telecomunicações de Aveiro, the universities of Évora, Aveiro, Porto and Coimbra, the Polytechnic Institute of Beja and the RAEGE Açores Association).
Oblivion is capable of performing 239 million operations per second and processing data volumes in the order of PetaBytes (PB). This capacity will now be available, not only for ENGAGE SKA (Enabling Green E-Science for the SKA Research Infrastructure), but also for the scientific community and companies, through the National Network for Advanced Computing.
The ENGAGE-SKA consortium has received funding of four million euros from the FCT, through the COMPETE 2020 Program, and it is intended that it will become part of the National Advanced Computing Network, RNCA, managed by the FCCN Unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
