Project Overview

  1. Objectives

The procurement contract for a new petascale EuroHPC supercomputer was signed between the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and Fujitsu, the technology provider.

This HPC system, which will be installed in Portugal, called "Deucalion", is a petascale supercomputer, capable of running the maximum performance of 10 Petaflops or 10 million billion calculations per second. The machine will use ARM technology, which is the Fujitsu A64FX CPU, used by Fugaku, the fastest supercomputer in the world today.

Deucalion will be installed at FCT's Minho Advanced Computing Centre (MACC), one of the four operational advanced computing centres in Portugal coordinated by FCT. The Deucalion will allow the development of a unique and innovative context to apply the European and global principles of green computing, taking advantage of a fully sustainable infrastructure, co-funded by national funds allocated to the area of Science and European structural funds allocated to the North region and the Innovation Support Fund and Energy Efficiency Fund (the latter under the supervision of the Minister of Environment and Climate Action).
