The Unit's initiative FCCN aims to adopt good environmental practices and more sustainable alternative technologies. Find out all about the project.
"Using ICT intelligently, promoting sustainability, is strategic to the mission of FCCN and its employees." This is how the General Coordinator of FCCN, João Nuno Ferreira, defines the starting point of the FCCN + Sustainable project. This initiative aims to strengthen the FCCN Unit's alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the FCCN +Sustainable project, the FCCN Unit has created an environmental policy that includes 14 principles of commitment, with a view to contributing to the sustainability of the country and the world. Some of the steps already taken include assessing the energy performance of fleets, setting up recycling points, installing water filtration machines and measuring the environmental footprint. It was possible to record that between 2016 and 2022, for example, the environmental footprint per employee fell by 75%.
To further deepen the search for sustainable practices, under the FCCN +Sustainable project, FCCN conducted an internal pre-assessment questionnaire. The answers revealed measures already adopted in the workplace and in employees' personal lives, as well as suggestions for new practices to be implemented.
There are currently 13 measures underway, out of a total of 26 measures planned in the short to medium term as part of the implementation of the FCCN +Sustainable project. The end result will be the creation and implementation of an environmental policy for the FCCN Unit, with a three-year action plan based on four pillars - environmental, economic, social and sustainability. The actions, which involve all the employees of the FCCN Unit, aim to inform and raise awareness, implement good practices and establish partnerships .
The aim of the FCCN +Sustainable project is to demonstrate that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be a driving force for a better and more sustainable future, even though they are one of the sectors with the highest energy consumption and consequent impact on the environment.
