Offering technological and digital solutions to national scientists is one of the fundamental elements of the mission of the FCT Unit FCCN.
Find out how the FCCN services support scientific activity in Portugal.
b-on and RCAAP
These two services of the FCCN Unit occupy complementary positions in the workflow of any researcher.
If, on the one hand, the Online Knowledge Library (b-on) is a way of ensuring unlimited and permanent access to thousands of scientific publications from some of the most important content providers, RCAAP - Open Access Scientific Repositories in Portugal, provides a platform for sharing results, with the publication of scientific articles in open access.
This last service accesses several Portuguese institutional repositories and its data is easily searchable through keywords.
It presents a great advantage for scientists and researchers by integrating their scientific production and increasing the dissemination and subsequent visibility of the work developed
PTCris
As a structuring programme, the work of PTCris is often invisible. However, through the implementation of this ecosystem, the activity of national researchers is becoming simpler, as it is easier to access information and manage scientific activity.
This work is based on four fundamental principles: Interoperability (under the motto "use once, reuse always"), Identifiers (for organisations and researchers), Data (creation of a database for all agents and actions involved) & Curriculum and competencies management .

Hummingbird
The Unit's videoconferencing service FCCN is dedicated to remote collaboration. It is an essential tool for teams to communicate and share knowledge online, with up to 300 participants.
The usefulness of Colibri became especially clear during the confinement context resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, by being the main means of communication between students, teachers, researchers and other professionals in the teaching and research community.
Based on the Zoom platform, the service allows sharing audio, video, text, images, whiteboard and even the participants' screen. Recently, Colibri started to allow the use of Zoom Apps, offering several new possibilities.

Educast
In an age when video content is assuming particular importance in communicating with the general public, Educast offers its users the opportunity to record, edit and publish specialised content.
In this sense, this service from the FCCN Unit can be particularly useful for sharing research results or for creating complementary pieces to a research project. On the other hand, on the Educast portal you can find more than 43,000 educational videos divided into areas of knowledge such as Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Technology or Medicine and Health.
SCIENCE VITAE and SCIENCE ID
An integral part of the PTCris ecosystem, the services CIÊNCIA VITAE and CIÊNCIA ID assume a special role in the activity of any scientist.
The platform CIÊNCIA VITAE consists of a database of researchers that gathers information such as their identifier, training, positions, competencies, research area, publications, affiliation, among others, and allows to create, generate and promote the curriculum vitae in a fast and simple way.
To date, the platform has 67,616 registered researchers and more than 1 million scientific articles referenced.
CIÊNCIA ID, meanwhile, is an identification system for the national scientific ecosystem, which allows each researcher to authenticate themselves through a single account.
It aggregates all your background in the scientific area, simplifies access and reduces bureaucracy.
GÉANT Innovation Programme
The GÉANT Innovation Program is the most recent innovation support initiative of this European network, and is promoted in Portugal by the Unit FCCN.
As part of this call, the European infrastructure of national education and research networks invited all the institutions linked to its community to submit a project proposal, to be funded.
In total, the GÉANT Innovation Programme supports areas such as networking, cybersecurity and education, and represents an investment of €300,000.
Each of the projects in the competition will receive a maximum of 30,000 euros in support over nine months.
8 Arquivo.pt
Obtaining credible information is a fundamental task for the work of any scientist and researcher
Arquivo.pt helps in this mission, specifically in cases where the necessary records are no longer available online.
Contents do not last forever on the Internet and Arquivo.pt guarantees their long-term preservation. It is a way to store and monetize hours of work and prevent your projects from disappearing from the web.
Some examples are: Master's Theses, Scientific Research and even personal portfolio in your areas of interest.
This service from the FCCN Unit has been preserving millions of files collected from the web since 1996, and is increasingly being used as a source of information for academic and scientific work.
Its usefulness is especially evident in the area of Social Sciences, with the possibility of diachronic analysis. By February 2021, this archive had already preserved 10,780 million web files and 27 million websites, totalling 721 TeraBytes in compressed format.
The Arquivo.pt platform also allows you to search by images. You can access old web pages or even remotely visit places that existed in the past.

There are also other services that may be useful for scientific activity, such as Filesender (for sending large files of up to 100 Gb) or the Advanced Computing solutions.
