Platform created by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and by the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB) is another tool at the service of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
O Science 4 COVID-19 is a platform that brings together ideas, publications and ongoing actions to combat the Covid-19 outbreak, as well as identifying available capacity and research groups.
The goal is also to provide means of online collaborative work, enabling direct communication mechanisms between all users, promoting interaction and collaboration.
As recalled by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, in his foreword signed on the portal, in the current context, it is important to "mobilize researchers and their institutions with the necessary capacity to effectively implement the efforts underway". On the other hand, he adds, it is essential to "mobilize other national scientific and technological institutes, companies and health technicians to ensure the effective implementation of the various actions".
Thus, the Science 4 COVID-19 digital platformcompiles available resources for use in Research and Development (R&D) projects and activities aimed at combating the Covid-19 pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, in line with the National Disease Preparedness and Response Plan of the Directorate General for Health (DGS), as well as the strategies of other European and international health authorities.
The portal groups together a wide range of initiatives from the Portuguese scientific community. From social and solidarity actions (such as the identification and provision of personal protective equipment to health professionals), to engineering (such as the adaptation, development and manufacture of various ventilator models) and the clinical and biomedical area (such as new screening protocols), to communication (such as the creation of information and educational materials about the new coronavirus for dissemination in the PALOP countries).
Scientific validation
Through this portal, any interested party may share ideas, actions and publications to combat Covid-19. These contributions are then validated by a technical and scientific validation committee, using, whenever necessary, entities of recognized scientific and professional merit to support the analysis and framework of the initiatives submitted in the various specific areas of application.
This committee is composed of Catarina Oliveira (President of the Board of Directors of AICIB), Patrícia Calado (Member of the Board of Directors of AICIB), Cristina Abreu Santos (Member of the Board of Directors of the Ricardo Jorge Institute) and Nuno Feixa Rodrigues (Member of the Board of Directors of FCT).
