At a time when applications for the Arquivo.pt Prize 2024 are now open, we went to remember the winners of the last edition and hear their testimonies.
1st place: "Traveling back in time on rails"
In July 2023, the work "Traveling through time on rails", by Antero Pires, Carlos Cipriano, Diogo Ferreira Nunes and Ruben Martins, was awarded 1st place in the Arquivo.pt Prize. The project showed the evolution of CP - Comboios de Portugal's timetables over 20 years, revealing the investment in the sector.
According to Ruben Martins, "It was great to realize that, with a platform accessible to everyone, we could make public information much clearer than it actuallyis." "We hope that the lines and conclusions of our project will have a positive impact on making journeys faster, something that is only possible, however, if there is real public investment in this sector."
2nd place: "Representation of women artists in the national press"
Written by Cláudia Sevivas and Miguel Boavida, this work won second prize in the competition in the last edition. It consists of a website that gathers information about women artists and looks at their representation in the press.
Cláudia Sevivas shared her testimony: "This award will help us move forward with the project. We want it to be possible to go directly to our website and have all the information about an artist: from her biography, to the works of art that have been produced and in which galleries, among other things."
3rd place: "Political Memory"
Miguel Lopes, Maria Carneiro and João Andrade were the third best classified in 2023. "Political Memory" is the name of his project, which consists of a collection of historical pages of the Portuguese parties currently represented in the Portuguese Parliament, and which allows intuitive and interactive analysis of information about each party.
These winners were "very happy to have been recognized for the work we've done over eight months. Now we intend to increase the information we have on our website and keep updating it with new data provided by Arquivo.pt."
Public Honorable Mention: "Newspaper Factory"
Miguel Almeida won the honorable mention for the Público newspaper with a digital newspaper created with content from several years ago, where users can consult not only news but also jokes, films, sports, etc.
"Winning this award is a great feeling. It's something that keeps my work going and keeps me reaching new heights. That was the goal from the start: to bring this newspaper to the top, and I've succeeded," says the winner.
Honorable Mention Aveiro Media Competence Center: "Imaginarium"
"Imaginarium", by Diogo Sousa, is the web application that searches for images based on similarities with other images and which won the honorable mention awarded by the AMCC.
By taking part in the award, Diogo Sousa wanted to "learn from the project. This recognition shows that my learning was good enough to receive the award and that people think it has some value".
For the future, his intention is for this solution to be implemented on the Arquivo.pt platform as a tool for its users, enabling them to search directly for images.
