Understanding and addressing climate change requires the rapid exchange of knowledge across geographical, economic, and disciplinary boundaries. That's why this year's International Open Access Week, which will take place October 24-30, 2022, has chosen "Open for Climate Justice" as its theme.
Climate Justice is an explicit recognition that the climate crisis has far-reaching effects, and the impacts will "not be borne equally or fairly, between rich and poor, women and men, and older and younger generations." These inequalities also affect the ability of communities to produce, disseminate, and use knowledge around the climate crisis. Openness can create pathways for more equitable knowledge sharing and serve as a means to address the inequalities that shape the impacts of climate change and our responses to it.
International Open Access Week is celebrated by individuals, institutions and organizations around the world and is an invaluable opportunity to connect the momentum around global knowledge sharing and open science, with policy changes and with social issues that affect people around the world.
This year's theme - "Open for Climate Justice" - is an opportunity to take action and to contribute to raising awareness about how greater openness will also pave the way for more climate justice. Open Access Week 2022 will be held from October 24-30, however, anyone is encouraged to promote discussions and take action around the theme "Open For Climate Justice" where appropriate throughout the year and adapt the theme and activities to local contexts.
