On November 3rd, the National Archives of Torre do Tombo will host the National Meeting on Digital Preservation. The Manager of Arquivo.pt, Daniel Gomes, will be one of the speakers.
It is on World Digital Preservation Day, November 3, that the National Meeting on Digital Preservation will be held at the National Archives of Torre do Tombo, in Lisbon. The event is sponsored by the Directorate General of Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB) and supported by the Portuguese Association of Librarians, Archivists, Information and Documentation Professionals (BAD).
This national meeting aims to explore topics such as legislation and digital preservation plans. Another focus will be on sharing success stories, and the manager of Arquivo.pt, Daniel Gomes, will be one of the speakers, sharing some of the main results and projects of this service of the FCCN Unit.
The meeting's program also includes a "round table" composed of experts in Digital Preservation, who will give their perspective on topics suggested by the participants during the registration process.
"In an increasingly dematerialized world, it is imperative to ensure that the information assets produced today are properly managed and preserved throughout their useful life. However, there are several contexts in which the useful life of information exceeds the longevity of the information systems that hold it, thus leading to a growing concern on the part of organizations with the correct preservation of these assets in a context of permanent technological evolution.
The concern with this issue stems from the need to comply with legal requirements, support organizations' operations, commercial and business continuity motivations, digital heritage preservation and enhancement, or a mix of all of these.
However, over the past few years, digital preservation programs have been implemented in the national territory, whose dissemination is imperative. This meeting aims to establish points of contact and synergies that stimulate the sharing of good practices that ensure a smoother transition to a digital society, safeguarding the longevity of the informational heritage of organizations."
