Arquivo.pt, a research infrastructure managed by FCT, through its National Scientific Computing Unit (FCCN), has announced the three winning finalists of the 3rd Edition of the Arquivo.pt Award 2020.
The first prize, worth 10,000 euros, was awarded to the "Desarquivo" project developed by Miguel Ramalho. This project developed a tool that allows to verify the relationship between entities, people, organizations and places based on the news published online in the last 20 years. This tool is public. Students, researchers, or any citizen may use it to quickly and dynamically explore the contents and relationships established.
The project "Arquivo.pt Extension" won second place, with a prize of 3 000 euros, and was developed by Rodrigo Marques and Hugo Silva. It is an extension for the current browser of Arquivo.pt, which allows advanced searches to be performed directly from the browser, without having to leave the page that is currently being viewed.
Nuno Bragança was the winner of third prize, worth 2,000 euros, with the project "Arquivo Económico.pt", which consists of an application that allows the comparison of prices of products since the time of the Portuguese escudo.
The Honorable Mention in this edition of Arquivo.pt Award was given to the project "Jornal do Passado", developed by Bruno Galhardo. The project consists of a game in which the user tests his knowledge about news or events, trying to get right the date in which they occurred.
The projects in the call were evaluated by an independent jury, composed of Miguel Fontes (executive director of Startup Lisboa), Helena Freitas (biologist and professor at the University of Coimbra), Paulo Bastos (TVI journalist), Maria Beatriz Marques (professor at the University of Coimbra and PhD in Literature in the area of Documentary Sciences) and Teresa Firmino (editor of the Science section of PÚBLICO). The awards will be delivered to these winners at the Science 2020 Meeting, which takes place in early November.
Arquivo.pt is a research infrastructure that archives and preserves web pages published in Portugal since 1996 and has an online search service that provides access to all the archived information. The main objective of Arquivo.pt is to preserve the information published on the web for memory, study and research, with access to the entire population.
Every year FCT opens the project call "Arquivo.pt Prize", having the 1st edition occurred in 2018. The results of the 1st edition can be consulted in Awards Arquivo.pt 2018 and those of the 2nd edition in Awards Arquivo.pt 2019.
